FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Sundays 2-8pm, Wednesday 8:30am- 1pm, Thursdays 8:30am-1pm, Fridays 8:30am-1pm, Alternate Saturdays  8:30am-1pm


Purpose: Under the general direction of the Director of Customer Service and Operations Assistant, maintains stacks and building including general upkeep and cleanliness of the library.


Reports to:   Operations Assistant and Director of Customer Service, Acquisitions and Cataloging


Custodial Responsibilities

Clean and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedure

Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; refill restroom dispensers; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers when necessary.

Conduct regular sweeps of the building and lot to locate messes and safety issues

Report any work to be accomplished by contractors to the Operations Assistant

Clean staff kitchen and appliances

Maintain janitorial supplies as needed

Request needed supplies and tools from Operations Assistant

Perform small repairs as necessary

Meet with inspectors and contractors providing information as requested

Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within 16’ of building

Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis

Wash accessible interior windows

Water plants as needed during the season

Assist patrons with material donations

Sweep and rake outside and keep drains free of debris.

Perform minor handyman duties, such as hanging clocks/posters, assembling furniture, etc

Attend to emergencies when necessary, following fire and safety procedures and regulations

Perform related duties as required

Customer Service Responsibilities


Sort, organize and re-shelve materials in their appropriate areas throughout the library


Straighten and shift materials on the shelves


Read assigned shelves, send items in poor condition to relevant area


Perform other related duties as assigned


Provides excellent customer service and strive to end each interaction with patron in a positive manner


Assist with setups in the library as needed


Take minutes at meetings as assigned.


Regular attendance as scheduled and performing tasks as assigned are essential job





  1. Ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs
  2. Ability to climb a 6-foot ladder
  3. Ability to stand for long periods of time; to bend and stoop frequently in order to reach low and high shelves, and to push a full book cart and vacuum cleaner
  4. Ability to spread ice melt using a hand-held shovel
  5. Ability to work in conditions including noisiness, frequent interruptions, odors, and inclement weather
  6. Ability to work with little or no supervision as required
  7. Ability to communicate promptly, effectively, and pleasantly with staff members, patrons, contractors, and inspectors
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees
  9. Ability to follow safety instructions
  10. Customer service skills; must be able to deal with the public in gracious and professional manner
  11. Basic knowledge of Windows based computers, internet browsing, internet searching, email, and electronic calendars
  12. Willingness to work rare odd-hour shifts
  13. Minimum of 16 years of age
